Understanding Power Curtailments: A Controlled Power Outage Process

What Are Power Curtailments?

Power curtailments refer to a controlled process where electricity supply is temporarily reduced. This action is initiated by our Regional Transmission Operator (RTO), a non-profit organization responsible for coordinating and controlling transmission systems in our area.

Why Are Curtailments Necessary?

When electricity demand surpasses available wholesale power generation, the RTO may instruct Clay County Electric to decrease the amount of power distributed. This is a proactive measure to maintain grid stability and prevent widespread outages.

What Happens During a Curtailment?

During a curtailment, you might experience a temporary, controlled power loss. Clay County Electric wants to assure you that this process is essential for ensuring long-term grid reliability. We are committed to keeping you informed and prepared during these events.

Communication & Timing

We understand the importance of timely communication. Curtailment requests can occur with little warning, often just 5 to 10 minutes before implementation. Although the process can be as unpredictable as the weather, Clay County Electric strives to minimize the duration of any curtailment.

Our Commitment to You

We pledge to keep you, our valued member-owners, informed about any curtailment events. We believe in transparency and will provide all necessary information to help you understand and manage these temporary disruptions. Together, we can ensure the continued stability and reliability of our power grid.
