Electrical & Fire Hazards of Operating a Generator

Operating a generator in wet conditions increases risk of shock or electrocution.

Electrical Safety Tips

  • Keep the generator on a dry surface
  • Dry your hands before touching the unit
  • If necessary to operate in wet weather, protect the generator per the manual—but never run it indoors to keep it dry
  • Never backfeed by plugging the generator into a wall outlet

Extension Cord Guidelines

  • Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated cords
  • Wattage rating should exceed total appliance load
  • Ensure cords are long enough to place the generator safely outside
  • Cords must be free of damage and have all required prongs
  • Protect cords from pinching or crushing

Fuel Handling Tips

  • Store fuel in labeled, non-glass safety containers
  • Keep fuel away from the home and any fuel-burning appliances
  • Turn off generator and let it cool for two minutes before refueling
